Our Story ~ the day we met

I’m gonna tell y’all our story. Why? Because I think it’ll be fun to relive the last 5 years (over a handful of separate posts) and I plan to turn it into an album later, that’s why. Plus, it’s a fun way to get to know us.

In fact, I want to get to know you too, so if you have your own “how we met” story, leave a comment with the link and I’ll read every single word!

Now, on to the day we met. Five words to describe the day:

Green ~ Beer ~ Kilts ~ Barleycorn ~ Marines

Obviously it was St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Chicago, Illinois – Saturday, March 15, 2008 to be exact.

Let’s start off with how the day progressed for the GIRLS!

My gorgeous friends Etosha & Melissa came down first thing in the morning. We had to see the Chicago River dyed green, obviously. So fun, especially at around 10am or so. Day drinking y’all!

Then it was time for the Irish Parade. See that blue sticker on my jacket? Not to get all political here, but it must be known that all of our swag was just that, swag. We were in the mood to collect as much as possible and participate in the parade, not make political statements.

There’s us, then there’s the gen pop. We got to give them candy. They loved us! We were powerful.

Next stop, Timothy O’Toole’s. Reviewing EXIF data tells me it was about 1:30pm in the afternoon when these images were taken. Something must have been HILARIOUS.

After a nap and refresh, DIANE arrived!

Funboxes reunite! We were OFF to Wrigleyville for some Barleycorn time.

Barleycorn was hopping as always. Random dudes all over, bartenders ready to serve, the dance floor upstairs awaits.

Now for the BOYS. I don’t know every detail of their day, but it goes something like this: drink, drink, break stuff, drink.

All of the boys came to Chicago for their Fallujah deployment reunion weekend. You know boys and their reunion weekends, especially MARINES. They’re basically bachelor parties.

Hubby must have known his bromance was about to simmer down. Boot Lips & Hubby got all the snuggles they could that weekend!

They were already at Barleycorn in Wrigleyville at 10am. They did not leave all day (to my knowledge).

More of the bromance.

…and then we met! Okay, this is just his hand…just before we met.

The real moment we met was after Moose (the super tall friend) caught our eye and when their buddy (below) offered us a very unique shot.

The girls and I instantly loved this group of guys and had a great time laughing at their antics.

Let it be known that the GIRLS were relatively sober (we had naps, after all) and the BOYS were three sheets to the wind!

Husband and I got to dancing and talking (as much as one can talk on a dance floor) and we hit it off right away.

Here’s our first picture together. Despite looking like I’m already with child, this is one of my favorite pictures of all time! He loved me the instant he saw my turtleneck!

Husband lived in Michigan at the time, but before going back home, he wanted to spend all day Sunday with me!

Boot Lips (his brofriend) came over and we all watched Stick It. Remember that movie? We still talk about how awesome it is to this day.

I certainly wasn’t looking for a boyfriend at the time (seriously, I was wearing a turtleneck – have you heard?) and Husband wasn’t living in Chicago, but we both knew there was something special between us.

I’ll admit I was skeptical (I’d had some male drama in the last few months before meeting Hubby) but there was no way I wasn’t giving us a chance.

One year later, he’d put a ring on my finger and we were getting ready for a trip to Europe!

Oh, and I had brown hair (seemed like a good idea at the time).

Next time I’ll be sharing some dating adventures, and eventually our wedding story.

Are you going to follow along?!

Just you, mom & MIL?

Well, alright.

  • What an awesome, fun way to meet! And even more awesome that you took so many pictures that night.
And so random, but your friend Etosha went to college with me. Which is super random considering how small our college is… 600 total students when we were there, haha!

  • This post had me giggling! I really enjoyed reading this one. Looking forward to the series. (And, I would seriously question your friends who let you leave the house to go to a bar in a turtleneck!! HA)

Since you asked…I met my hubby where we both used to work and I initially thought he was an ass (true story and he knows). When we met, he was almost 23 and I was 31 (sounds so dirty! MEOW) and he was far more mature than the men I was dating who were my age. I was recently single, didn’t want to sit at home bored that weekend, so I asked him if he wanted to hang out (good thing I’m a forward woman)–making sure he understood it “wasn’t a date”! Our first non-date was April 21, 2007, we were engaged by that December, and married the following November. <3
